The annual Oscars ceremony took place in Hollywood last night (Sunday 24 February) and included some historic firsts. Hannah Beachler and Ruth E Carter became the first black winners in the Production Design and Costume Design categories respectively, for their work on Black Panther. Brit Nina Hartstone became the first European woman to win a Sound Editing Oscar for her work on Bohemian Rhapsody. Speaking at a press conference after the ceremony, she commented “hopefully there will be many more women after this year.”
Whilst no women were nominated for Best Director again, despite such strong contenders, there were successes for female directors in other categories. Best Documentary Feature went to Free Solo, which was co-directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi; Best Documentary Short went to Period. End of Sentence., with director Rayka Zehtabchi commenting “I can’t believe a film about menstruation just won an Oscar!”; and Best Animated Short went to Bao, directed by Domee Shi.
The unofficial prize for Best Speech went to Olivia Colman, who described winning the Oscar for Best Actress (for her performance in The Favourite) as “hilarious” and blew a raspberry at the Academy when told she needed to wrap it up! Take a look here.
Congratulations to all of the winners.
