Pretty Red Dress Synopsis:

Travis has just been released from prison and finds everything has changed while he's been gone. While girlfriend Candice is on the up and auditioning to star in a musical, teenagedaughter Kenisha is struggling in school and her relationship with her mum is tense. When Travis buys Candice her dream dress for the audition to smooth over the family's problems he ends up creating even more… As secrets and desires threaten to spill out, Travis is forced to re-examine who he is and how he wants to be perceived in the world.

Pretty Red Dress is written and directed by Dionne Edwards. It is produced by Georgia Goggin for Teng Teng Films, with financing from the BFI, awarding National Lottery funding, and BBC Film, in association with Magellanic Media Ltd with support from Great Point Media. The film was developed with BBC Film, the BFI and the Sundance Institute.

Pretty Red Dress is released in cinemas in the UK & Ireland on 16 June by BFI Distribution, following regional preview screenings + Q&A with Dionne Edwards & Georgia Goggin.

Bios:

Dionne Edwards, Director

Dionne is a screenwriter and director. Her highly anticipated debut feature Pretty Red Dress stars Natey Jones and singer Alexandra Burke, making her screen debut. The film was developed and funded by BBC Film and the BFI and was selected for the Sundance Screenwriting and Directing Labs 2019.

Dionne’s other credits include That Girl, a 30-minute drama in Channel 4’s On the Edge series and her short film We Love Moses which premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and went on to screen at over fifty festivals worldwide, including ABFF and TIFF, picking up nine awards. It has been licensed for television by Cine+, Canal+ and HBO and is currently available on Netflix.

Dionne is a fellow of the inaugural Women at Sundance Adobe Fellowship 2020/21. She is represented by Independent Talent in the UK and CAA and Grandview in the US.

Georgia Goggin, Producer

Georgia is a producer, screenwriter, and director. As a producer she works most often with writer/director Dionne Edwards, collaborating as Teng Teng Films. Their highly anticipated debut feature Pretty Red Dress stars Natey Jones and singer Alexandra Burke, making her screen debut. The film was developed and funded by BBC Film and the BFI and was selected for the Sundance Screenwriting and Directing Labs 2019. Pretty Red Dress follows five shorts with Dionne, including We Love Moses which premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and went on to screen at over fifty festivals worldwide, including ABFF and TIFF, picking up nine awards. It has been licensed for television by Cine+, Canal+, HBO, Netflix and Disney+.

Alongside her work with Dionne, Georgia’s producing credits include The Uncertain Kingdom, a collection of twenty-one films about the UK from established and emerging directors which was released in summer 2020 to four-star reviews, and Canvas 5, the directorial debut of writer and actress Karla Crome. In 2020, Georgia wrote and directed Bend, starring Robin Weaver and Greg Wise, which was funded by BBC Drama and premiered at Encounters 2021. Her previous short, Sorry Fi Disturb Yuh, written by Russeni Fisher, was shortlisted for the Out-Spoken prize for poetry in film. Georgia’s feature screenplay Kite was a 2021 Academy Nicholl Fellowship semi-finalist. She is currently writing family adventure Beeswing for The Electric Shadow Company.

Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor, Host

Joy runs Joi Productions, a Film and TV production company focused on genre led Queer, Black and Female content. In 2019, she produced the hit Blue Story, which became the top grossing film of its genre. In 2020, she was named a Screen International Star of Tomorrow and a BAFTA Breakthrough, as well as Joi Productions receiving a BFI Vision Award. At the end of 2021, she produced Aml Ameen’s debut, Boxing Day, the first all-black Christmas film out of the UK.

More recently Joy has produced Champion for BBC and Netflix. In 2022 Ringside Studio acquired a stake in Joi Productions.

How will the online event work?

Attending participants will not be visible to others and will be muted throughout the session. After the talk, there will be an opportunity for audience members to ask questions by using the Q&A feature.
