Cannes Film Festival Competition Line-Up Announced

The competition line-up for this year’s Cannes Film Festival has been announced. Only three of the 18 films competing for the Palme d’Or are directed by women – Girls of the Sun (Eva Husson), Capernaum (Nadine Labaki) and Lazzaro Felice (Alice Rohrwacher).

In the Un Certain Regard selection, six films directed by women are represented amongst a selection of 13 films: Angel Face (Vanessa Filho), Euphoria (Valeria Golino), Friend (Wanuri Kahiu), Little Tickles (Andréa Bescond & Eric Métayer), My Favorite Fabric (Gaya Jiji) and Sofia (Meyem Benm’Barek).

Festival Director Thierry Frémaux commented “Our point of view is that the films are selected for their intrinsic qualities. There will never be a selection with a positive discrimination for women,” and blamed wider issues in the industry for the lack of female directors.

In the wake of the Weinstein scandal, Frémaux said “We want to question our own process about the parity of the juries” and that the Festival will “discuss equality of salary.”
