WFTV Event: Filming the emergency services without the legal drama

26th March 2020 18:30

Thursday 26 March | 18:30 – 20:30

St Anne’s Church | 55 Dean Street | Soho, London | W1D 6AF

We film in an era where privacy, data protection and duty of care issues can make programme-makers nervous. TV and film content law specialist Clare Hoban takes a practical look at how to tackle ‘blue light’ filming issues e.g. filming the police, medics and their patients while still achieving great content. Clare, an ex-BBC lawyer, has advised on hundreds of hours of ‘blue light’ shows and is well known to many WFTV members. Using clips and current examples, she will demystify topics such as the use of body-worn cameras, duty of care, requests for journalistic materials, and managing privacy and contempt risks. This talk is suited to everyone in production from junior production staff through to senior producer/directors.

Clare Hoban, Specialist Television and Film Content Lawyer at Reviewed & Cleared. She reviews the content of television and film before broadcast to ensure the production companies and broadcasters are not sued. Clare advises on every genre of television and film from documentaries, factual drama, factual entertainment, fictional drama, live and ‘as live’ broadcasts, reality television, entertainment shows, news output etc.

There are only a handful of lawyers with this specialism in the UK. Clare is one of only a few of female lawyers in the UK advising programme makers in industry as opposed to advising a broadcaster from ‘ in house’. She started her career as Head of Legal and Public Affairs for the trade body that represents the magazine industry, followed by 12 years at the BBC as a senior content lawyer and the last 4 years she has spent in private practice advising content creators and broadcasters including SVOD platforms and all the main terrestrial channels. Clare is well known to the various insurance companies who require legal content reviews of content in order to qualify for E & O insurance.

This event is for WFTV members only.
